Is BEE Key to Driving Economic Stimulation in a Post-covid Era?

Transcend Transformation Survey 2022

At the end of 2021, we launched our second BEE and Transformation Survey. The findings revealed that implementing BEE in the last two years has meant navigating through a lot of disruption and uncertainty. However, as our country’s social inequalities worsen, we observed business leaders and BEE Champions demonstrate an urgency to:

  • realise a more visible impact of their BEE investment.
  • implement innovative transformation strategies that align business needs with those of the communities around them.

Four key trends emerged among others as from the survey, highlighting the most urgent concerns that business leaders and BEE Champions have as they navigate BEE and transformation, including:

Ownership: Most corporates are interested in delving into ownership but do not understand the pillar.

Skills development: Pandemic regulations have impacted on the accessibility of learning, while budgetary constraints have decreased training spend.

Human Capital: Amidst the devastation of retrenchment and job losses, BEE champions are being challenged to drive transformation while working together with Human Capital managers to facilitate inclusion in the workplace.

The role of BEE in driving economic development: The economic & social impact of the pandemic is making it more challenging to make an impact through BEE.

Transformation managers in 2022 still have the same concerns they did in 2020. With a climbing unemployment rate and an expanding population living in poverty, it is time to re-imagine BEE and focus our transformation efforts toward projects that have the biggest impact.
