Gender-Based Violence: A Call for Urgent Action from Corporate SA.

As we exit womens month, it is important to remember that the celebration, as well as the protection of our women in South Africa, should not be isolated to August. 

A crisis that calls for your support:

• Femicide: South Africa has one of the highest femicide rates globally. Women in South Africa are five times more likely to be killed as a result of gender-based violence than the global average.
• Sexual Violence: The country has one of the highest incidences of rape in the world. Statistics indicate that a woman is raped every few minutes in South Africa, though the true numbers are likely higher due to underreporting.
• Intimate Partner Violence: Studies have shown that a significant percentage of women in South Africa experience violence at the hands of their intimate partners.

Use your BEE investments in protecting and empowering our women

While the causes are complex, GBVF is deeply rooted in inequality and imbalances of power. StatsSA reports that prevalence of physical violence is notably higher among less-educated women, and both physical and sexual violence decrease with increasing wealth. We also know that unemployment is higher in women - 45.5% in 2024 (expanded definition) vs 38.6% in men - and women’s earnings remain significantly lower.

Government signed The National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill into law on May 24, 2024, and significant investment is being made into education, community-based programmes, equipping police to better deal with GBVF cases, and improving conviction rates of offenders. But we must do more to fundamentally empower women and girls, in our households, communities, learning institutions, and workplaces.
